When the winter we have been discussing the proposal of the Riga Polytechnic Institute to conduct a competition for economical driving, it became clear that it will give participants an opportunity to show not only skill but also to check on practice efficiency of all devices and accessories, various options for changing the adjustments, and even car design and systems - all that should (at least presumably) to reduce fuel consumption. That is why the position of the rally permitted to do everything possible with the car, but do not degrade its quality, impact on traffic safety - do not touch the brakes, steering and lighting equipment. In a word - create and taste it! We had hoped, though not much to see something new and useful, but ... But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

To evaluate the results of this work, it was necessary to compare it with the result obtained on the production car. For this purpose, were invited to participate in a rally outside the factory crews to offset current models produced without any alterations. They fought for minimum fuel consumption of only the skill of management, based on knowledge of the car and feel of the road. These results may serve as a guide for owners of some of the same model car, taking care to reduce fuel consumption. Unfortunately, not all models have been presented here, but the all-new front-wheel drive - the VAZ-2108, AZLK-2141, "Tavria", and "as" Oka "to start out.

Along with all the experimental and walked a few specially trained us and the car factories. Three absolutely the best results shown by them, are given for reference in the August issue of the journal. Learn more about these machines, we will tell you.

With what alterations and improvements have been car presented at the rally? We met with them, when, as it should be before any competition, they took control of the technical committee for compliance with the Regulations. Dmitrievsky, a regular contributor to the magazine, here representing the federation of motor sport, the drivers tried to find out that, except they recorded in the "Technical Inspection Act" and what we do not see changed in the car.

It turned out that most of the cars participating noticeable alterations were not subjected to the engine and auxiliary equipment designed to reduce fuel consumption, were not. Their owners from personal experience, stories of friends, the publications in our journal consider them to be at least useless, and therefore did not want to risk.

Some of the same for one reason or another have decided to upgrade their cars. Here are some examples. ZAZ-965A (1966 release, start number 20) equipped with water injection into the cylinder during the compression stroke of the pump through a nozzle chetyrehplunzhernogo Peugeot Open. Water consumption - 3-4 l/100 km. Despite the low vehicle weight, fuel consumption during the rally proved to be quite high (5.41 l/100 km), even more than another of the same "Zaporozhets", but without alterations (4.92 / 100 km).
